Anaconda-Deer Lodge County is a consolidated Commission-Chief Executive government, responsible for all city and county services.

The Anaconda-Deer Lodge Growth Policy, formerly the Comprehensive Master Plan, was completed in 1990 and then revised in 1992, 1998 and again in 2003. The Growth Policy is implemented by the Development Permit System and Subdivision Regulations, adopted in 1992 and 1994, revised in 2003 as well. The Development Permit System is the mechanism guiding officials, developers and citizens through the land and building development and approval process.

Police Protection
  The Police Department consists of a Chief of Law Enforcement, Assistant Chief, 19 patrol officers, two detectives and one part-time community service officer. In order to assist in the enforcement of federal, state and county ordinances, the department is also involved in mutual aid agreements with the State of Montana, Montana State Hospital, Montana State Prison, Montana Highway Patrol and the Southwest Montana Drug Task Force. Six full-time and four part-time dispatchers and one civil clerk operate the 911 Dispatch Center.
Ambulance Service
  The Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Ambulance is a 911-dispatched service and provides 24-hour emergency response. Equipment includes three fully equipped ambulances, one four-wheel drive unit, two automatic defibrillators, three sets of the Jaws of Life and all requisite life-saving tools. The 20-member paid volunteer crew consists of 14 emergency medical technicians, four first responders and two registered nurses.
Fire Protection
 

A combination of fire departments, U.S. Forest Service and the Anaconda Division of the Department of Natural Resource and Conservation handle fire protection. Seven fire districts are located within Anaconda-Deer Lodge County.

The Anaconda Fire Department is equipped with four fire engines and ten firemen (four paid, six volunteer). The fire insurance ratings for the City of Anaconda are class 7 for residential property and class 6 for commercial property.
