Chamber
Tourism Services
Information on Anaconda's Historical Downtown, local attractions,
and recreational opportunities, is available at the Anaconda
Visitor Center. The Visitor Center has travel advisors available
to answer questions, give directions
and disseminate travel publications throughout the week. (In
summer we are open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm, and
in winter we are open to the public 9 am to 5 pm Monday through
Friday).
During the summer, the Visitor Center operates a 90-minute antique
bus tour of the city with two tours a day that leave the Visitor
Center at 10 am and 2 pm. For travelers not interested in the
90-minute tour, a 16-minute video of local attractions is also
available to view at the center. The Visitor Center is a good
stop to pick up local memorabilia and specialty items unique
to Anaconda.
Local
Tours of Historical Downtown Anaconda
Local efforts have saved historic
structures within the downtown that were destined for demolition.
The old City Hall building was restored and is now the community's
art center, cultural center and Historical Society's museum.
The Chamber office sits across
the street from the recently restored Davidson Building, now
a tea room, gift shop and beauty salon. Currently a local task
force is working to save Anaconda's historic street light system.
The history and historical architecture of Anaconda are enjoyed
by many visitors and the local preservation and development efforts
of these sites cater to the growing number of cultural heritage
tourists.
Historic
Washoe Theatre

One of the most popular
historic sites in Anaconda is The Washoe Theater. The theatre
is one of the most magnificent and well preserved public threatres
in the country.
Built in 1931 in a grand way in the Art Deco style, it has been
ranked by the Smithsonian Institute as the fifth most beautiful
theater in the nation. The theatre is on the National Register
of historic places.
Kennedy Commons

The Kennedy Commons is a city park in the center of downtown
that includes a summer band stand and a winter skating rink.
A community Christmas tree is decorated there each year during
the annual Christmas Stroll Celebration and it is a popular location
for ice skating during the winter.
Other Local Attractions
Other sites
of interest around Anaconda include Lost Creek Raceway and Fairmont
Hot Springs Resort. Many visitors travel to Anaconda to participate
in the drag, street car, and motor cross races held at Lost Creek
Raceway.
Fairmont Hot Springs
Resort features four naturally heated swimming pools (two Olympic
sized pools, one indoors and one outdoors plus two hot soaking
pools, one indoors and one outdoors), a 350-foot water slide,
Wildlife Zoo, and an 18-hole golf course, 153 rooms/suites, two
restaurants, and spa services. The Hot Springs is 12 miles east
of Anaconda.
Anaconda also has excellent antique shops and speciality stores
that make us a must stop for bargain shoppers.
Other local attractions not to
be missed include the Anaconda
Smelter Stack State Park, taking a walking tour of Historic Anaconda
buildings and a visit to Washoe Park, home of the oldest fish
hatchery in Montana. This hatchery for several species of trout,
including the rare native westslope cutthroat, was built in 1908
and still offers visitors excellent viewing areas with fish food
dispensers for kids of all ages who like the thrill of watching
huge trout in a feeding frenzy near their fingertips. A visit
for
Anaconda's newest attraction, the Copper
Chute, is a super slide at the Charlotte Yeoman Martin Complex
on the northeast edge of Anaconda.
For directions, call the Anaconda Chamber at 563-2400 or send
us an e-mail at anacondachamber@rfwave.net.
The slide starts atop a 40-foot mound of earth and undulates
to the bottom in sections with varying slopes, none steeper than
45 degrees. A sand pit at the bottom of the 140-foot slide breaks
the ride, but riders can bail out safely before reaching the
bottom.
The surface of the slide is made out of puckboard -- the same
material used around the sides of hockey rinks. It is high density
plastic that is extremely durable and requires little maintenance.
The slide is open to kids of all ages and best of all -- it's
free.
Scenic Day Drives
With Anaconda as a travel hub,
the visitor can take a variety of scenic day trips in all directions.
Explore some of the most spectacular mountains of Southwest Montana.
Summer visitors enjoy drives along the Pintler Scenic Loop and
the National Forest Service Scenic Bi-Way. Both drives have great
fishing, wildlife viewing, ghost town exploration, and rockhounding
opportunities.
The Pintler Scenic Loop is a 55-mile drive along Highway 1, that
takes visitors from Anaconda past lakes, ghost towns, a waterfall,
rockhounding areas, a sapphire mine, and two state parks to the
small town of Drummond where travelers can connect with Interstate
90 or return to Anaconda.
National Forest Service Scenic By-Way is an 82-mile drive that
guides visitors over the Continental Divide, through Mount Haggin
Wildlife Management Area, along the Big Hole River, to Coolidge
Ghost Town and Crystal Park.
With a rich heritage of mining in the region, ghost towns abound
in all directions from Anaconda. Within a 40-mile radius, visitors
can see the Gold Coin Mine, Southern Cross, Old Georgetown, Garnet,
Coolidge, and Racetrack. Anaconda serves as a convenient base
for explorations of these ghost towns, offering hotels, restaurants,
convenience stores and other amenities.
